Packing for a Winter Trip

I have gotten several emails from readers asking suggestions of what to pack for a winter trip, so I thought I would post my key items when packing for Amsterdam this past December.  Winter is tricky,  of course you want to look put-together in your photos of all these new and beautiful places, but winter pieces are bulky and take up a lot of room in the suitcase. I recommend keeping it light and minimal (the few times I've over-packed its a big hassle). Plan it out ahead of time. Bring pieces you can mix and match, and re-wear. Winter is all about the layers, so pack basics.

As far as pants go I only brought three; my favorite pair of skinny denim, one colored or print pair, and leggings (great for travel, perfect for the plane). I always bring a stripe shirt, its a neutral to me (Check out Madewell) Also color tees always look great in photos. You have to remember that the majority of the time exploring the streets, sight-seeing, etc. you will be in a coat - so don't go crazy bringing loads of statement tops - they won't be seen. I put more thought into my coat. I bring one classic black peacoat, one statement coat and of course - the puffer! Puffers are not the most flattering, but its a must in cold weather and you can find cute ones (check out Zara). What makes an outfit in the winter is the acccesories. I always bring my rayban aviators, they work in any country, anytime of the year.  Scarfs add instant style! You'll need one pair of black leather gloves, one cross body bag, possibly one tote bag as a carry-on for the plane, and one or two beanies! Then, you are good to go and well under the suitcase weight limit.
The perfect start to a wonderful trip!

  1. Hey Morgan! I love the hip-length black puffer jacket. I feel like the belt gives some very much appreciated shape! Any idea where I can find one? I can usually only find the longer jackets with belts. Thanks!

    1. Hey Erin! The ankle boots are Sam Edelman (I have them in black and grey and I where them with EVERYTHING) and the flats are Steve Madden.

  5. I feel like all of these comments are asking where these are from. I've been looking for a pair of jeans EXACTLY that burgandy color. So, um, can you tell me who makes those or where they are from? :)

  6. That puffer jacket looks adorable on you in the photos. Being on disability, I obviously have a ton of time at home and I've started to read about fashion. What do you think about Tory Burch? Michigan seems to be a bit slower with trends than the west coast. Also, the one thing that is the most confusing about style for me is this mismatching colors trend. Could you do a blog on how to match up colors, textures and patterns with items you may already have in your wardrobe? The only thing I've managed to try is grey and off-white together. I just don't get it, ha ha! :)

  7. Get several markers in black or another dark color to ensure that you won't run out of ink. If you are worried that if you write directly on the box it may not be visible, buy some white labels so your writing can be more clearly seen.
